Mike Sonksen (a.k.a., "Mike the PoeT") has authored two volumes of poetry and essays celebrating the people, places and history of greater Los Angeles: I am Alive in Los Angeles (iUniverse, 2006) and Letters to My City (Writ Large Press; 1st edition 2019, 2nd edition 2023), a volume combining decades of field experience, research and personal observation of L.A.'s people and neighborhoods. A third-generation native of L.A., Sonksen has regularly performed his poetry in venues across the region since the 1990s and written hundreds of poems and essays about the city for various platforms including a regular column carried on the PBS SoCal/KCET website since 2012. Along with being a professor at Woodbury University, Sonksen conducts tours of the city's neighborhoods and hosts poetry readings at various venues.
