Sehba Sarwar is a poet, novelist, artist and social activist primarily focusing on immigration and border issues. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, Callaloo, ASIA: Magazine of Asian Literature, and Creative Time Reports, among other publications. A second edition of her novel, Black Wings (Veliz Books), was released in the U.S. in 2019. Appointed Altadena Poet Laureate for Community Events for the 2024-2026 term, she is the recipient of several awards, including the City of Los Angeles's (COLA) Independent Master Artist Project grant (2023-24), the City of Pasadena's Independent Artist grant (2019), and Mid-America Arts Alliance's Artistic Innovations grant (2015). Prior to moving to Southern California, she founded and directed for 16 years Voices Breaking Boundaries (VBB), a Houston-based alternative arts organization that tackled social justice issues at a local and global level.
